How did you learn about FI?

I first discovered the concept by stumbling across a book on Amazon called How to Retire Early. From there, I went down the rabbit hole and discovered all the great FIRE blogs.

What was your financial status when you began?

We started out as a couple with -$130,000 net worth. Ten years later, we had a 0 net worth. When we first discovered the concept of financial independence / early retirement, our net worth was probably just over $100,000. (We weren't explicity tracking it.)

What has been the most impactful change you've made towards FI?

We recently downsized our house. That cut our housing costs in half, lowering our monthly expenses AND giving us more to save/invest. That's the most impactful single choice.

What, if anything, do you wish you could have done differently?

We did a great job of growing our incomes while staying in careers we loved. Unfortuantely, our lifestyle also inflated. If we'd kept that low and been investing earlier, we would have been FI long ago.

What advice do you have for others going down the path of FI?

Start early. Grow your income, don't let your lifestyle inflate. Also, do not make your path miserable or you won't stick with it. Enjoy the now AND the future.
